The cyclonic storm Mandus over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cross the coast near Chennai on December 9 midnight. In view of this, moderate to heavy rains are expected in many parts of Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) gave this information on Thursday. Mandus is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. The Tamil Nadu government said that 12 teams comprising about 400 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the state force have been deployed in 10 districts.

The cyclonic storm is expected to cause heavy rains in Nagapattinam and Thanjavur in the Cauvery delta region, besides Chennai and its three neighboring districts and Cuddalore. In view of this, a holiday has been declared in schools and colleges on Friday. According to the latest update of the Meteorological Department, Mandus storm has moved over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is about 480 km east southeast of Chennai and 390 km from Karaikal. At the same time, the Chennai Corporation has asked people not to go to the beaches and not to park cars under trees.

State government opened more than 5000 relief camps in all districts
The state government has opened over 5,000 relief camps in cyclone-prone districts to house people evacuated from low-lying areas. All basic amenities including food, drinking water and health have been provided to the people living in the camp. A round-the-clock control room has also been opened to monitor the effect of the rains, which will keep an eye on the heavy rains for the next two days and its impact.
