‘Current Indian batting line-up is nowhere near as strong as the Fab Five of the last decade’: Shane Warne

Former Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne praised the Indian team and the current crop of batsmen but was quick to add that it was nowhere close to the Indian batting order which included Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid. Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

While Warne was impressed with India captain Virat Kohli’s performance and all his batting exploits, he felt that India’s overall batting composition in Tests is no match for the ‘Fab Five’ of 2000.

“Virat Kohli is one of the best batsmen on the planet, if not the best in all forms, but when you look at the top five of Sehwag, Ganguly, Dravid, Laxman and Tendulkar, it is not bad. I don’t think you can say this is the best Indian team to bat at,” Warne said in a show on Sky Sports on 10 September.

Apart from praising Virat Kohli, Shane Warne called Rohit Sharma another great player. He also described wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant as a superstar of the future. However, he praised the Indian fast bowling attack and said that the pedigree and skills of the Indian bowlers have made the team a powerhouse, a team that can win in any situation all over the world.

After the series against England was called off with the score line reading in India’s favour, Indian players have started gathering in the UAE for the upcoming phase of the Indian Premier League. The second phase of the IPL will begin in the UAE from September 19. This will be followed by the ICC T20 World Cup and hence, IPL is a great opportunity for the players to improve their preparations.
