CUET 2022: More disruption for students or equal opportunity for state boards, experts divided on CUCET

Admission to central universities in the academic year 2022-23 will be on the basis of entrance test, not 12th. Common University Entrance Test (CUET), The syllabus of the exam to be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) will be based on the class 12 syllabus of NCERT. Class 12 board exam marks will no longer be the main criteria for admission to the college, however, it is still necessary to clear the board and secure minimum marks. Some colleges may also consider class 12 marks while finalizing the merit list for admission.

While some experts have welcomed the move saying that students will no longer have to fill separate application forms and they will address different courses of state boards, others said that it will be against people from economically challenged backgrounds Which will be difficult to prepare. NCERT syllabus wise and board will put more pressure on the candidates.

“CUET is a bold step by the government to put all the central universities under one umbrella entrance test. Though testing is mentioned in the NEP 2020, the government will bring it so early and close to the admission cycle, it is quite a surprise for the industry and the fraternity,” believes Aman Mittal, Vice President, Lovely Professional University.

The board puts pressure on the candidates

Mittal says, “This created new pressure on the students appearing for the board exams.” How will it be organized?

For a lot of people who come from low-income status, people from rural India with very little knowledge about the exam in 2022 to clear CUET will be another burden financially as well as mentally. Mittal says the uncertainty brings panic among the stakeholders.

Himanshu Gautam, CEO and Co-Founder, Saphala says, “We should not ignore the mental stress of students by the announcement of this exam as they are expected to suddenly shift their focus from board exam to an entrance exam.”

Bridging the gap between state and central boards

The introduction of CUET is a welcome step as it addresses the commonality faced by students of different boards, believes Gautam. “A centralized system would translate really well for students from state boards, who would eventually have to rely on their aptitude to get a chance to study in premier institutions,” he says.

The exam structure provides various local language options to the students along with domain-specific knowledge and general matters. It is a holistic module that will provide equal opportunities to the students, says Gautam.

CUET will replace several individual exams that students had to write separately early. Also, students will not need to fill out numerous forms hoping to get into university, explains Anshul Vashisht, Certified Career Counselor at UCLA, US.

The exam pattern has been kept simple and detailed, focusing on the basics like English, Numerical Ability, Reasoning Ability, General Knowledge and domain specific tests. Thus, it will provide a common platform for all the students to perform and get admission in their dream college without the hassle of filling so many forms and without the worry of achieving impossible level of percentage in class 12 board exam , says Vashistha.

Since the UGC has specified that no such subject coaching will be required to crack the competitive exam and the syllabus will be based on NCERT books, even people from a humble background can focus on the exam and can pass it. “Also, since the entire form filling process has now been skipped by many universities, students will now have to fill only one form, saving a lot of money,” says Vashisht.

,Delhi University The cut-off often reached 100 per cent. For an average scorer, studying at a top college was impossible. But now with CUCET, everyone has a fair chance. For many courses, only an aptitude and language-based test is required. This is a golden opportunity for all the students. They should burn the midnight oil and get a seat in a prestigious college,” concluded Vashistha.

As students have lost two years of full-time schooling in the pandemic, we expect a calibrated approach to this year’s CUCET, said Ujjwal Singh, CEO, Infinity Learn by Shree Chaitanya

“CUCET/CUET is a step in the right direction. There should be a more relevant assessment system in the admissions process and CUET is designed to do that. Worldwide, core competency and domain application are the key criteria for selection in top university programs,” says Singh.
