The District Crime Branch has taken over the investigation into the recent murder of a young doctor here, police said on Friday. Dr Vandana Das, house surgeon at Azizia Medical College Hospital, was working at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital as part of her training. He was stabbed to death by a man brought there by the police in the early hours of Wednesday.

“The district crime branch will now investigate the matter,” a senior district police officer told PTI. The accused G Sandeep, a school teacher by profession, is currently in judicial custody.

The police brought him to the hospital for treatment after he was injured in his leg. He was brought there by the police after he dialed the emergency number 112, claiming that his life was in danger. When the local police traced him, he was standing away from his home, surrounded by local residents and his relatives with a wound on his leg and a stick in his hand.

He was taken to the hospital along with his brother-in-law and a leader of a local political party. While tending to his wound, he turned violent, initially stabbing the local leader and the police and then repeatedly stabbing Das, who did not survive. Das, who was seriously injured in the attack, died a few hours after the incident. The killing of the young doctor sparked outrage in the state, following which the government decided to issue an ordinance to amend the Hospital Safety Act.
