Crime against humanity: CM Biren Singh on women being paraded naked in Manipur 

New Delhi: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday spoke on a video in which two women were paraded naked in a field during caste violence in the state and said he “felt bad”.

“We saw the video and I felt very bad, this is a crime against humanity. I immediately ordered the police to arrest the culprits and the state government will make efforts to ensure death penalty for the accused. Every human being should condemn this,” said Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Video of Manipur women surfaced, CJI Chandrachud intervened

This happened when the nation hung its head in shame after a video of sexual violence surfaced from Manipur, which is said to be 3 months old. Following its dissemination on the Internet, outrage spread throughout the country and India’s judiciary had to intervene.

Taking cognizance of the video of the Manipur women, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud condemned it, saying it was the biggest constitutional violation. “This is unacceptable,” he said.

“We are deeply troubled by the video that was distributed yesterday. We are expressing our deep concern. Now the time has come for the government to step up and act. This is unacceptable,” the CJI was quoted as saying by Live Law.

Along with this the CJI also remarked, “We will give some time to the government to act or else we will intervene.”

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Center and the state government to take immediate action on the incident of stripping two women in Manipur.

Highlighting the gross violation of the Constitution, CJI Chandrachud said, “We are of the view that the court should be apprised of the steps taken by the government to book the perpetrators of such violence. What has been shown in the media and the visuals that have come out show a gross constitutional violation.
