Cricket-Australia to start World Cup defense against New Zealand

Australia will begin their Twenty20 World Cup title defense against New Zealand in a re-run of last year’s final in Sydney on 22 October.

The Australian players will host the tournament, which begins on 16 October and will run till 13 November for the first time.

The hosts are drawn into Group 1 of the Super 12 stage of the competition with New Zealand, which they defeated in Dubai in November, along with England, Afghanistan, winners of Group A and runners-up in Group B from the first round.

Group 2 will consist of India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh and Group B winners and Group A runners-up.

Sixteen countries will compete in the tournament, which will be played in Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Sri Lanka and Namibia will face each other in Group A in the first round of the tournament on 16 October in Geelong, where they will be joined by two qualifiers.

Group B will have West Indies, Scotland and another two qualifiers.

The final will be played under lights at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 13 November.
