Cricket Australia chief Nick Hockley on Monday became the latest person to contract COVID-19 during the Ashes series against England.

Hawkley, who has been fully vaccinated, developed mild symptoms and was immediately tested and isolated with a confirmed positive PCR result.

He said, “I am isolated at home with my family, whose report has come negative.”

In line with Cricket Australia’s biosecurity protocols for the tour, Hockley had no direct contact with the Australian or England squads.

After Australian batsman Travis Head tested positive last week and was ruled out of the fourth Ashes Test starting in Sydney on Wednesday, Usman Khawaja is expected to replace him.

Head’s close opener Marcus Harris was put off a charter flight from Melbourne to Sydney on Friday as a precautionary measure.

This meant that he and standby players Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis had to travel approximately 900 kilometers (600 mi) between the two cities to join the squad.

The England camp has also been hit hard over the past week, recording at least seven positive cases among support staff and family members.

These include coach Chris Silverwood, fast bowling coach John Lewis, spin coach Jeetan Patel and strength and conditioning boss Darren Waynes.

Batting coach Graham Thorpe is expected to take over as head coach for the Sydney Test.
