The protesters, who were demanding transparency in the recruitment process for state government jobs, alleged that the police action against them was “unprovoked”.

While law enforcers claimed that activists of CPI(M)’s youth wing DYFI had defied prohibitory orders, the organization’s state secretary Meenakshi Mukherjee said the rallyists were peacefully moving towards ‘Uttarkanya’.

“We wanted to give a deputation to the North Bengal Development Minister, but the police lathi-charged us without any provocation,” he told reporters.

Alleging illegality in appointments to government jobs in West Bengal and several cases of irregularities in appointments of teachers and non-teaching staff in schools, DYFI on Thursday organized ‘Uttarakanya Abhiyan’, demanding transparency in the recruitment process .

A heavy contingent of police stopped DYFI supporters in Tinbatti Mor area after some of the rallyists broke a barricade and a scuffle broke out between the police and the protesters.

Traffic was disrupted in some parts of Siliguri city due to the scuffle.
