The CPI(M) on Sunday expressed strong protest against the alleged controversial remarks made by Kerala Congress working president Kodikkunil Suresh about Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family and sought to know whether the party leadership supported the statement. Suresh on Saturday said that if Vijayan was the leader of the Renaissance, he should have married his daughter to a Dalit. In a statement, the CPI(M) asked Congress leaders to “stop personal attacks” against Left leaders and said such statements were made to cover issues within that party.

“Congress leaders are making baseless statements and continuously insulting CPI(M) leaders including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The statements that transcend all limits of decency show the downfall of the Congress party. Sonia Gandhi and the state leadership should clarify whether they support the remarks made against the Chief Minister and his family. Smuggling of gold through diplomatic goods.

The Congress has distanced itself from the remarks made by Suresh, who is also a Lok Sabha member, to Leader of Opposition in the Assembly VD Satheesan, saying it was not the party’s stand. During his sit-in to demand a CBI probe into the alleged SC/ST fund scam, Suresh had said the renaissance claimed by Vijayan was a “joke” and alleged that he was ignoring the SC and ST community.

“He (Vijayan) claims to be a Renaissance leader; I am not commenting on that. But if he was such a leader, he should have married his daughter to a Dalit. That would be a renaissance. His renaissance is just a pretense to remain in power.”
