Viswam urged the minister to ensure a comprehensive review of airlines across the country and not compromise on the safety of passengers.

CPI MP Binoy Viswam has written to Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressing concern over the “poor and dire” security conditions of airlines following several incidents in the past few weeks. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice after eight technical glitches in SpiceJet aircraft in the last 18 days.

Like SpiceJet, IndiGo and Vistara also faced a technical snag on Tuesday. Viswam urged the minister to ensure a “comprehensive review” of airlines across the country and not compromise on the safety of passengers. “This letter is written about the poor and serious security conditions in which airlines are currently operating in the country,” he said.

The Left leader said there have been several security incidents and emergency landings in the past few months. “There have been about 21 mid-air security incidents across different airlines, 10 of which have happened in the last month alone,” he said.

“Additionally, several airlines have faced failures like non-operation of air conditioning due to which passengers suffocated. Such a sorry state of affairs is unforgivable and creates tension among the already apprehensive population regarding air travel,” he said.

He alleged that these issues “are a reminder that only 4% of the population uses air travel,” India In terms of per capita consumption of air tickets, along with some poor African countries.” “The increasing burden of airline expenses coupled with the rising cost of aviation fuel raises doubts in our minds about the compromise of safety procedures as a cost-cutting measure,” the CPI leader said.
