CoWIN Launches New API ‘Know Your Customer’s Vaccination Status’: How It Works

CoWIN has developed a new API called ‘Know Your Customer’s Vaccination Status’ or KYC-VS, which will enable a verification unit to know whether a person has been vaccinated against or not coronavirus Or not, the Union Health Ministry said on Friday. More than 72 crore vaccine doses have been given in the country since the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 was flagged off on January 16 this year.

To provide proof of vaccination for each of these individuals, CoWIN is already issuing digitally verifiable certificates. This certificate can be saved in a digital device (smartphone, tablet, laptop etc.) or kept in a Digi Locker, from where it can be shared digitally as proof of vaccination, if required, the ministry said in a statement. can be done. Similarly, at entry points where such a certificate is required (for example, in malls, office complexes, public events, etc.), it can be shown in both digital and physical form. However, there may be instances where an institution is not required to look at the certificate in full and it only needs to know whether a person has been vaccinated or not, the ministry said.

An enterprise/employer may like to know the vaccination status of its employees for resumption of functions in offices, workplaces etc. Railways may wish to get the vaccination status of passengers who are reserving their seats in trains. Airlines want to get the vaccination status of passengers who are booking their flight tickets, and/or airports want to allow only vaccinated passengers to pass through. It added that hotels may want to know the vaccination status of residents at the time of check-in at the hotel, or while booking online. “As socio-economic activities are gradually being revived while maintaining the safety of all, there is a need to digitally transmit the vaccination status of individuals to the institutions with whom they are working as employees. or may be attached to all causes, passengers, residents etc.

“Therefore, there is a need to enable authentication service like Aadhaar for the status of vaccination through CoWIN. To take care of these cases and other cases that may come up, CoWIN has developed a new API called ‘Vaccination Status of Your Customer’ or KYC-VS,” the ministry said in the statement. To use, a person needs to enter their mobile number and name. After that, they will get an OTP which they will have to enter. In return, the Co-Vin will be sent to the entity verifying the vaccination status of the individual. will send a response, which will be as follows:

– the person has not been vaccinated

– the person is partially vaccinated

– the person has been fully vaccinated

The ministry said that this response will be digitally signed and can be shared immediately with the verification entity. KYC-VS is consent-based and privacy protection, it added. Additionally, to facilitate quick integration and rapid adoption, the CoWIN team has designed a webpage with APIs that can be embedded in any system. This will allow seamless integration with any system in no time, the statement said. In addition to use cases, this service may be used by any service provider, private or public, for which it is important to confirm the vaccination status of an individual in order to facilitate the requested service.
