CoWIN App Or Its Database Not Breached Directly, APIs Being Looked Over: Govt Sources

New Delhi: The Center on Monday said that it does not appear that the CoWIN app or its database has been hacked directly, as alleged in some reports after a Covid data leak surfaced on social media app Telegram.

In the context of some alleged CoWIN data breaches on social media, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) immediately responded and reviewed the threat, said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT.

The minister said, “A Telegram bot was throwing CoWIN app details on entry of phone numbers. The data was being accessed by the bot from a threat actor database, which seems to be full of stolen/stolen data from the past.” ” in a tweet.

He said that it does not appear that the CoWIN app or database has been directly breached.

“The National Data Governance Policy has been finalised, which will create a common framework of data storage, access and security standards across the government,” Chandrasekhar said.

Earlier, Trinamool Congress leader Saket Gokhale alleged that the data of several citizens, including politicians and journalists, who had taken the Covid vaccine had been leaked and questioned why the Center was not aware of the incident.

In a series of tweets, Gokhale, who is a spokesperson for the Trinamool Congress, said: “Shocking: Modi govt has a massive data breach where personal details including mobile numbers, Aadhaar numbers, passport numbers, voter IDs of all vaccinated Indians , details of family members etc. have been leaked and are freely available.”

He also said that the data of many senior journalists has also been breached. He claimed, “Personal details of every Indian who got vaccinated for Covid-19 are freely available on this leaked database.”

His remarks came in the wake of the alleged data breach of several citizens after taking the Covid vaccine.
