COVID Updates: India records 1,033 new infections, first case of XE variant detected in Mumbai

New Delhi: India has reported over 1000 Covid infections for the third day in a row. The country has reported 1,033 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the active caseload to 11,639.

According to the data shared by the Ministry of Health, the number of 1,222 patients who have been cured of the virus in the last 24 hours has increased to 4,24,98,789.

The recovery rate in the country now stands at 98.76%, while active cases account for 0.03% of the total cases.

This comes after India detected the first case of the XE variant of SARS-CoV2 in Mumbai on Wednesday.

The Health Department of Mumbai said that the patient is a 50-year-old South African citizen. She came to India on 10 February. After testing on February 27, she was found to be COVID-19 positive.

His laboratory sample has been sent to Kasturba Hospital Central Laboratory for genome sequencing.

The Department of Health said, “Preliminary sequencing found this to be a new XE variant. Although GISAID has also confirmed this, INSACOG decided to go for another round of genomic sequencing at the national laboratory to confirm the XE variant.” is.” PTI report said.

The patient is asymptomatic and on repeated tests, RT-PCR was found to be negative.

“The new version of XE is a combination of the BA.1 and BA.2 strains omicron and was found to be responsible for the increased viral transmission as per the primary reports. Repetitive changes in the genomic structure are part of the natural life of the virus and there is no need to fear, but everyone should take proper precautions.”
