CM Bhupendra Patel said, “In the larger public interest and keeping in mind the welfare of all citizens of the state, the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit to be held from January 10 to 12, 2022 has been postponed for the time being.”
Due to this announcement many other programs were also either postponed or cancelled. All pre-VGGS events i.e. Health Summit and Innovation Summit and VGGS Trade Show have been postponed; The flower show in Ahmedabad and the state-organised kite festival ahead of Uttarayan on January 14 were cancelled.
The latest wave of Covid-19: The state recorded 4,213 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, the highest in the last 230 days or 7.5 months. The number of active cases has also gone up to 14,346, the highest since June 8.
Gujarat added 28% of its active cases on Wednesday – higher than Tamil Nadu (25%), Maharashtra (23%), West Bengal (23%), according to data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) department. , Karnataka (22%) and Kerala (11%). In comparison, Bihar added 40% active cases in a day, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 38% and Delhi at 36%.
In the last few days, over half a dozen top bureaucrats and political leaders, including a minister, have tested positive for COVID-19. Top sources said that in view of the rapid rise in Covid-19 cases in the state, the government was flooded with inputs from the corporates as well as the administration that large-sized events expected to see large crowds would need to be curbed. .
A senior official said, “The government was forced to reconsider the event as it could not enforce the ban on private events when it was organizing a sizable VGGS event that attracted thousands of people from across the world. People were gathering under one roof.”
Prior to the event, 135 MoUs were signed with a total envisaged investment of Rs 1.76 lakh crore, mainly in the chemical, energy pharma, ports, infrastructure, logistics and metals sectors. A senior official said that along with the VGGS event, the Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show 2022, which was to be held from January 10 to January 13 at a venue in Gandhinagar, has also been postponed.
