The state health department said they immediately sent the Corbevax vaccine to all districts on Tuesday.
Director of Health and Family Welfare, Assam Munindra Nath Ngatey, told TOI. He said the dose of Corbevax had reached the state about 10 days ago, but the health department waited for the government to announce the launch date for the vaccination campaign.
Ngeti said the government would follow the same strategy adopted in immunization of children in the 15 to 17 age group. “Our team will visit schools to vaccinate the children. The dropouts will have to be brought to the Covid vaccination centres,” Ngeti said.
Also, all over 60 citizens, whose number is estimated to be 28.88 lakh in the state, will be vaccinated with a precautionary dose during the campaign that begins on Wednesday. There will also be a formal launch of the precautionary dose on Wednesday.
In Assam, around 10 lakh children in the age group of 15 to 17 have been vaccinated with the first dose, while 7.6 lakh have been given the second dose. Though the initial immunization target of the state was 20.37 lakh in the 15 to 17 age group, health department sources said that a large number of children are covering children above the age group of 18 years.
More than 4 crore vaccine doses have been given in the state till Monday night. While the first dose has crossed 2.34 crores, more than 1.99 crores second doses have been given. About 2.76 lakh precautionary doses have also been given for select categories of beneficiaries. Altogether about 4.36 crore doses (4,36,55,380) have been given since inception.
