Covid-19 scares the fourth wave! 23 omicron BA.4, BA.5 cases found in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Amid the rising threat of a fourth wave of COVID-19, Maharashtra on Saturday reported 23 COVID cases infected with omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5. After this the number of such patients has increased to 49, PTI quoted an official of the state health department as saying. According to the report of Mumbai-based Kasturba Hospital Central Laboratory, which has been evaluated by the National Institute of Virology in Pune, 23 cases included 17 infections due to BA.5 and six by BA.4. Of all the patients, one is a minor, two are in the 18-25 age range, nine are between 26 and 50 years old and 11 patients are above 50 years of age.

The report said that out of 23 patients, 12 are women and the rest are men.

The report states that out of 49 samples, 28 are in Mumbai, 15 in Pune, four in Nagpur and two in Thane.

The state health department’s bulletin said the Kasturba laboratory has tested 364 samples, which were collected between June 1 and 18, and except one, all were of Omicron type, while B.A.2 and B.A. 238 have been found in 325 samples.

This happened after three patients of BA.4 and one of the BA.5 omicron sub-variants of the coronavirus were found in Mumbai earlier this month. BA.4 and BA.5 are sub-types of the highly transmissible Omicron strain of coronavirus that was responsible for the third wave of COVID-19 in India.

The dominant variant in this boom is a sub-lineage of Omicron which is Ba5 and Ba4. Although these strains are highly transmitted, most cases are mild and are managed with home isolation.
