COVID-19 pandemic may become an endemic in 2022

It has been almost two years since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world hard. Unfortunately, even two years later, we are still battling the evil virus that keeps changing and evolving antibiotically. People said goodbye to 2021 with a new form of corona virus – Omicron.

As the new version arrives and creates a new wave of the pandemic, countries are considering giving a booster dose of vaccines to prevent the devastation that occurred during the previous delta-induced phase. There is a discussion going on in the scientific fraternity regarding the Covid-19 pandemic that it is turning into an endemic.

A vision that currently seems idealistic, with Covid-19 turning into an endemic, yet actually carrying enough weight to become a reality soon. However, a substantial amount of policy-making still needs to be done before we look at this reality. Furthermore, the transformative nature of the virus requires specific approaches.

According to a Bloomberg report, the Omicron version that emerged from South Africa dealt a hard blow, but the damage and paranoia have been comparatively less in comparison to the world in the last two waves. In an interview with Bloomberg, Spain’s deputy prime minister, Nadia Calvino, said, “We are probably starting to see an infection phase toward becoming an endemic disease, which doesn’t mean we have to stop being prudent. But it does indicate that we should take measures that are very different from the measures taken two years ago.”

With repeatedly churning out new forms of the virus, countries will, inevitably, have to treat COVID-19 as a disease that can be managed and lived with. Although COVID-19 will not reflect the properties of endemic (a region-specific disease), it will behave a bit similarly.

Experts believe that the COVID-19 pandemic may follow a seasonal pattern, with cases increasing during the winter and localized outbreaks of the disease. This seems possible because the world, which dealt with an unprecedented visitor two years ago, is now better prepared to deal with the issues that may arise with the existence of the coronavirus.

Nubar Afyan, co-founder of Moderna Inc., told Bloomberg, “2022 may be the year the pandemic enters an endemic phase, but it really depends on what happens and what happens around the world.” Decisions are taken.”
