COVID-19: LGBTQ community receives first dose of vaccine in WB’s South 24 Parganas

Members of the LGBTQ community were vaccinated against COVID-19 on Monday at the Mahamayatala office of Rajpur Sonarpur municipality in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. The municipality started the vaccination campaign after people from the LGBTQ community had trouble getting jabs. More than 1200 members of the community live in Rajpur Sonarpur Municipality area and none of them had received their supplements before today’s initiative.

The municipality has made separate arrangements for the vaccination of LGBTQ members living in the area. He received his first dose by showing his identity card and entering his name and phone number. Ali Mandal, a member of the governing body of the municipality, was also present during the exercise.

Members of the LGBTQ community thanked the municipality administration for this initiative. He said he was having problems registering himself to receive the vaccine dose.

Earlier, arrangements were made for the people belonging to LGBTQ community in Durgapur in West Bardhaman district. He was vaccinated at Sagarbhanga High School in Durgapur. The vaccination program was started by a private factory with the help of an NGO.

In India, members of the LGBTQ community are now struggling to get themselves vaccinated for COVID-19. Many LGBTQ members, especially from marginalized backgrounds, do not have proper photo ID. This comes as a roadblock when one wants to get vaccinated against the deadly novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, West Bengal on Sunday reported 1,297 new cases taking the COVID-19 tally to 15,05,394. A health bulletin said 20 fresh deaths were recorded in the state taking the death toll to 17,799. A total of 1,777 more people were cured of the disease, taking the recovery rate in the state to 97.57 per cent. Now, there are 18,780 active cases in the state.
