Regarding the Gyanvapi mosque, the Hindu side claims that there is a Jyotirlinga under this disputed structure. Not only this, there are also pictures of deities on the walls of the structure. It is claimed that the Kashi Vishwanath temple was destroyed by Aurangzeb in 1664. Then the mosque was built from its remains, which is known as Gyanvapi Masjid, on a part of the temple land.

In 1993, the Allahabad High Court ordered to maintain the status quo on the spot by imposing a stay.

However, there was a hearing in the Supreme Court on the validity of the stay order and after the verdict, the hearing of the matter started again in the Varanasi court in 2019. At present, many cases are pending in many courts regarding this dispute. on which the hearing is going on.
