Vadodara: Jewellery worth Rs 1.67lakh was robbed from a couple near Rojham village in Dahod district late on Wednesday night. The robbers had punctured a tyre of the car in which the couple was travelling from Vadodara to Dahod to ensure that it stopped on the highway.
The incident took place at around 10.30 pm on the Ahmedabad-Indore national highway when Dinesh Vanzara, a resident of Dahod, was returning home from Vadodara in a car with his wife Neeta. Vanzara is a teacher in the St Mary’s School in Dahod.
Vanzara stated in his complaint with the Dahod rural police station that when he was near Rojham he felt that his car’s tyre was punctured. Vanzara stopped the car to check the tyres and found the front tyre on the driver’s side was flat.
At this time four unidentified persons came out from the darkness and one of them hit Vanzara with a stick on his leg. The man snatched his gold chain and threatened Vanzara with a knife asking him to hand over his gold ring and gold-plated bracelet too.
Other robbers threatened Vanzara’s wife Neeta and forced her to part with her ‘mangalsutra’ and earrings. Vanzara raised an alarm and managed to stop a vehicle on the road. Seeing this, the robbers escaped into the darkness. The offence registered by Dahod rural police based on Vanzara’s complaint states that the total value of the stolen booty was Rs 1.67lakh.
Dahod superintendent of police Balram Meena said that prima facie it seemed that the accused were from the nearby areas. The police were verifying the whereabouts of the accused known to conduct highway robbery.
Meena said that to prevent such incidents in the future, patrolling had been enhanced on the highway. Owners of highway eateries and hotels have also been asked to be more vigilant and inform the police regarding any suspicious person.
In the past, such incidents were common on the Indore highway. A series of steps were taken to prevent them. Sources said that it is after a long time that such an incident has taken place in the area.
