The incident came a day after parts of the northeastern states withdrew the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

Two civilians were injured during counter-insurgency operations conducted by the Indian Army’s 12 Para Special Forces on Friday night at Chasa village in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The injured couple – identified as 28-year-old Nokfua Wangpan and 23-year-old Ramwang Wangsa – have been shifted to the Assam Medical College and Hospitals in Dibrugarh for treatment.

It is said that the security forces opened fire in the area around 2 am, after which both of them started running. Later, the villagers surrounded the special forces personnel demanding justice for both the injured and senior officers reached the spot.

The incident came a day after parts of the northeastern states withdrew the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

The AFSPA, under which a geographical location has been declared as a disturbed area to facilitate the operations of the armed forces, is now fully covered in only 31 districts and partly in the four northeastern states – Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. Will be applicable in 12 districts. , These four states together have 90 districts.

The move apparently came after recommendations of a high-level committee set up to examine the possibility of lifting the law after the army killed 14 civilians in Nagaland’s Mon district in December last year in a case of “misidentification” .

AFSPA empowers security forces to conduct operations and arrest anyone without a prior warrant, in addition to providing security forces with immunity from arrest and prosecution for murder.
