Countries rush to close borders again as Omicron Covid variants Complete list

The World Health Organization (WHO) said the omicron variant has the potential to spread internationally, posing a “very high” global risk of increasing infections, which could have “serious consequences”, Reuters reported. The WHO said countries should use a “risk-based approach to adjust international travel measures in a timely manner”. Japan became the latest country to announce that it would close its borders to foreigners.

These countries have imposed travel restrictions in the wake of the Omicron scare:

  • Australia: Australia’s borders remain closed to tourists from all countries except New Zealand and Singapore. According to reports, Australia has implemented new requirements for arrival at home or hotel for 72 hours while awaiting the results of the COVID-19 test.
  • Japan: Japan announced on Monday that it would suspend the entry of all foreign visitors from around the world. The measure will take effect from Tuesday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said. Earlier this month, Japan eased border controls for short-term business visitors, foreign students and workers. Border controls will be restored following the decision to suspend the entry of all foreign visitors.
  • United States of america: On Friday, the United States imposed new travel restrictions on southern African countries. Travel restrictions from South Africa and seven other countries (Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi) to the United States will take effect from Monday. According to administration officials, US citizens and lawful permanent residents are exempt from the ban.
  • Seychelles: South Africans and visitors from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe will be denied entry into the Seychelles from Saturday, 4 December.
  • Bangladesh: On Saturday, 27 November, Bangladesh suspended all travel to and from South Africa.
  • Saudi Arab: According to reports, flights to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini have been suspended.
  • Sri Lanka: The Sri Lankan government announced that most visitors from six southern African countries, including South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho and Eswatini, will undergo mandatory quarantine.
  • Britain: The UK has imposed a travel ban on arrivals from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia from Friday. Non-UK and Irish residents who have lived in six African countries in the past 10 days will be denied entry into England. The temporary ban on commercial and private aircraft coming from six countries will also apply.
  • Israel: Israel had already added South Africa and six other African countries to its “red list”. It imposed a 14-day quarantine for Israelis returning to the country from those nations.
  • Italy: Authorities in Italy have banned entry for those living in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia or Swaziland over the past fortnight.
  • Germany And Scotland Britain has also joined forces in banning travel to six African countries.
  • France French Health Minister Olivier Veran told Reuters it had also suspended all incoming flights from southern Africa for 48 hours.
  • Singapore: The health ministry said all non-Singaporeans and people without permanent residence in the city who have a recent travel history to seven African countries would be barred from entering or relocating to Singapore. The new restrictions, which took effect on Sunday, apply to South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe. AFP reported that Singapore citizens and foreigners holding permanent resident status arriving from those countries would undergo a 10-day quarantine. Singapore Airlines Ltd said it has converted some of its passenger flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town to cargo only, according to a Reuters report. Recently, Singapore began to reopen foreign travel. However, after detecting the Omicron variant, the country deferred plans to open its borders to vaccinated travelers from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia as those countries are transit hubs for African travel, according to reports. .
