Australia shortens waiting times for Covid booster shots amid Omicron fears

Australia said on Sunday that Omicron would reduce waiting times for people to receive the COVID-19 booster vaccine following a surge in cases of the variant.

Australia previously said it would offer a COVID-19 booster to everyone over the age of 18 and who had a second dose of the vaccine six months ago.

But with the Omicron version increasing cases, Australia’s Health Minister Greg Hunt said the time interval after the second dose would be reduced to five months.

“A booster dose, five or more months after the second dose, will ensure that protection from the primary course is even stronger and longer-lasting and should help prevent the spread of the virus,” Hunt said in an emailed statement. “
