Tharoor said he has known Jaishankar for a long time and considers him a friend. ‘But on this issue, I think we don’t need to be so diluted,’ he said

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to “calm down a bit” in response to Jaishankar’s statement criticizing the West for its “bad habit” of “commenting” on the internal affairs of other countries.

Speaking to reporters on the remarks, Tharoor said he has known Jaishankar for a long time and considers him a friend. “But on this issue, I think we don’t need to be so diluted. I think it is very important that as a government we learn to take some things for granted. If we start reacting to every comment, then we are actually doing ourselves a disservice,” he told ANI.

“I urge my good friend Jay to calm down a bit. I guess it’s one thing to say something in a park full of youth, but when it reverberates around the world, it doesn’t play very well.”

Jaishankar asserted his “God-given right” to speak about the internal affairs of other countries during a ‘meet and greet’ interaction with over 500 young voters, joggers, organized by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya and Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan. strongly condemned the West for and visitors at Cubbon Park on Sundays.

In a question regarding the statements made by Germany and the United States regarding the disqualification of the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi The External Affairs Minister, as a Member of Parliament, said, “This is because the West has long had a bad habit of commenting on others. They somehow think it’s some kind of God-given right. They have to learn from experience that if you keep doing this then other people will also start commenting and they will not like it if this happens. I see that happening.”

Meanwhile, Tharoor on Sunday said he would have advised his senior party colleague Digvijaya Singh against his ‘Thank you Germany’ tweet after the country took note of Gandhi’s disqualification.

“The international attention – and negative press for India – should not come as a surprise to Mr (Narendra) Modi and his government. Doubts about the democratic credentials of this government have been growing over the past few years, as evidenced by the global media.

“Nevertheless, I would advise my highly respected senior colleague and friend not to say what he did. Tharoor asserted, “It has always been an article of faith for the Congress party that we do not need or accept any foreign patronage after being under 200 years of colonial rule.”

“That pride is deeply ingrained in every Indian,” he said, “that we are fully capable of solving our own problems.”

A sessions court in Gujarat’s Surat on Monday granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He had filed an appeal against his conviction in a criminal defamation case related to his 2019 “Modi surname” remark, for which he was sentenced to two years in prison.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge RP Mogera said it would hear the petition for suspension of conviction on April 13 after issuing notice to complainant Purnesh Modi, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Gujarat cabinet minister.
