There is a tradition of carrying the Guru on his shoulder.
Tamil Nadu has a tradition of carrying a Mahant in a palanquin for the last 500 years. The people here believe that if they walk on foot with the Guru on their shoulders, then they are blessed and their respect for the Guru is reflected. This whole controversy was going on regarding the removal of the palanquin of the Mahant of Dharmapuram Adhinam in Madurai.

This monastery is located near the Meenakshi Amman temple in Tamil Nadu, from where the procession was to be taken out on May 22, but the district collectorate had banned it citing human rights. Against this, the Mahant of the Math and his disciples started protesting. Devotees said that they would take out this yatra by disobeying the orders of the administration and follow their tradition.

Officials had told tradition a violation of human rights
The association named Dravida Kazhagam had first complained to the administration regarding this. Mayiladuthurai district secretary of the association Thalapathyraj had said that it is wrong for humans to take a human in a palanquin, so it should be stopped. Following his complaint, the district revenue divisional officer J Balaji had issued a ban order on April 27. He had said the practice was a “violation of human rights”. This tradition hurts human honor, that is why it has been banned.

The British also never stopped
Swamigal, the 293rd Mahant of Madurai Adhinam, opposed the ban on the procession. He had said that Madurai Adhiyanam is a major religious centre. Here traditions should be respected. He further said – this event is being held for hundreds of years. This program was never banned even during the British rule and was allowed by all the Chief Ministers even after independence. ,
