The debates were on essay-type questions, where the examinees were asked to choose one of the three options related to the question about the Father of the Nation and write an explanatory essay on it.

The main question was whether Mahatma Gandhi had always distanced himself from the labor movement of the country. The three options given to the examinees on the reasons for this separation were: a) Mahatma Gandhi always represented the lobby of the mill owners b) Mahatma Gandhi wanted to avoid the conflict between labor and capital and c) Mahatma Gandhi about the outcome of the movement I was worried. on the law and order situation.

Historians and various teachers’ associations have strongly criticized the development, claiming that the question is not only controversial but also spreads misinformation. “Nowhere in the secondary syllabus is it mentioned that Mahatma Gandhi dissociated himself from the labor movement. It is clear that the person who drafted this question never had history in its syllabus,” said a member of the All Bengal Teachers’ Association.

Historian AK Das pointed out that one of the major and successful movements launched by Mahatma Gandhi was the “Ahmedabad Satyagraha” in March 1918. Das said, the hunger strike in support of the demand of 35 percent increase in wages of the mill workers.

WBBSE officials, however, have claimed that many times such questions are asked in a different style to assess the intelligence of the students attempting the question. He has also assured that the interest of the examinees will be taken care of while evaluating the answer sheet and under no circumstances the examinees will be put to harm.
