Karnataka minister KS Eshwarappa, who came to the fore in the alleged suicide case of contractor Santosh Patil, on Thursday announced his resignation from his post. The senior BJP leader said he would submit his resignation on Friday as he did not want the party to be in trouble.

Maa Chamundeshwari will prove me innocent. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that he will investigate the matter thoroughly. God punish me if I am wrong. The culprits should be punished. I will come back after clean chit. I didn’t want the party to be embarrassed. I have spoken to the CM on this. Tomorrow evening, I will meet the CM and submit my resignation,” Eshwarappa, who is the state’s rural development and panchayat raj minister, said while addressing a press.

Weeks after Eshwarappa was accused of corruption, Patil, a Belagavi-based contractor, was found dead at a hotel in Udupi on Tuesday. In an purported suicide note in the form of a WhatsApp message, Patil has blamed Eshwarappa for his death. Based on a complaint by Patil’s relative, the Udupi city police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Eshwarappa.

The minister not only denied the allegations but also filed a defamation suit against him. “There is no question of resigning. I will have to wait for the court’s decision in the case filed against Santosh Patil. I make it very clear that nowhere is my fault,” Eshwarappa had earlier said.
