The Congress on Wednesday stepped up its attack on the BJP government after petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 80 paise for the second day in a row and said it would protest both inside and outside Parliament. A record 137-day gap in rate revision ended on Tuesday with an increase of 80 paise per liter in rates.

Prices were stable since November 4, ahead of assembly elections in five states. Congress MPs from both the Houses of Parliament protested outside the Gandhi statue in the Parliament House complex against the hike in the prices of petrol, diesel and LPG gas. Party MPs have also given adjournment notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to discuss the issue.

“We will continue to protest against this unfair price hike both inside and outside Parliament. The government is looting Rs 10,000 crore from this price hike,” Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters. He said party leaders were of the view that the government had stopped wage hike due to the assembly elections and started increasing the prices after the elections were over.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, ‘Loot people plan’ is on! Petrol diesel prices hiked by 80 paise, Rs 1.60/litre in 2 days. “The best time to rob the farmers is the harvesting season. It is their divine right to rob the middle class-salaried. Don’t dare protest or they will show the film or hide it behind religion-caste,” Surjewala said on Twitter.
