Congress sources said the suspension of Patiala MP Preneet Kaur was aimed at sending a message to other leaders who were not toeing the line ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Congress leader and former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s wife and Patiala MP Preneet Kaur was on Friday suspended from the party a year after she was served a show cause notice.

The party has asked Preneet Kaur to answer within 3 days as to why she should not be expelled.

Congress disciplinary panel member secretary Tariq Anwar said in a statement that the action came following complaints against her by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Raja Waring and some other state leaders that she was helping the BJP in Punjab.

Waring had written to the AICC’s Disciplinary Action Committee about Preneet’s anti-party activities. After analyzing the complaint by the Disciplinary Committee, it was decided to suspend him.

Party sources said the suspension of the Patiala MP was aimed at sending a message to other leaders who were not toeing the line ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections.

“Congress President has received a complaint from PCC Punjab President Amarinder Singh Raja Waring, alleging that Patiala MP (Lok Sabha) Preneet Kaur is indulging in anti-party activities to help BJP. Some other senior Congress leaders from Punjab also share this view,” Anwar said in a statement.

“The DAC has carefully considered the same and decided that Patiala MP Preneet Kaur should be suspended from the party with immediate effect and she has been asked to show cause within three days as to why she should not be expelled from the party . Anwar, who is also the AICC general secretary, said.

In November 2021, the Congress issued a notice to Preneet, seeking an explanation for her alleged “anti-party activities” and openly declaring her support for her husband Amarinder Singh, who is in a bitter power struggle with Navjot Singh Sidhu. Joined BJP after the fight.
