Congress needs youth leadership, will not give Gandhi trio to anyone: Natwar Singh

Congress veteran and former Union minister Natwar Singh has scathingly accused the position of his party as a crisis. Punjab Amarinder Singh announced that he is going out after being removed from the post of CM.

Speaking to News18, Natwar Singh said that the party is in “very bad shape”. “What kind of Congress party do you have now? The Congress he (Amarinder Singh) joined is very different from the Congress he is now. It is in very bad condition. I don’t know whether he will leave Congress or not, but the fact is that Congress was once one of the largest democratic parties in the world. Today, it is in a pathetic condition,” said Natwar Singh.

Asked whether he blamed the Gandhi family for the Congress situation, Singh said: “Yes, I do. Who else is calling the shots? Not Ghulam Nabi Azad, not AK Antony. No one in the working committee. It is the family that is calling the shots.”

Natwar Singh had left the Congress after 25 years of association over his differences with Sonia Gandhi. He said, ‘Gandhi will not allow change. All three will not allow anyone,” he said, referring to Sonia, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

“Rahul Gandhi has been working in the Congress party since 2002. He has been an MP since then. He is over 50 years old. His sister is a little younger than him. They are not young. They are knocking on the door of middle age. Congress needs very young people,” he said.

Singh, who is also the brother-in-law of Captain Amarinder Singh, expressed displeasure over the manner in which the Captain was removed from the post of CM. “It is absolutely shocking. Here is one of the senior most CM of India. He has been the CM for nine and a half years. He has done a good job and without any explanation, you decide to have a PCC meeting at midnight and Don’t inform him. What option did he have? Any self-respecting person will resign,” said Natwar Singh

“It is the defeat of the Congress party. Who does he have as his replacement?” he added.

Commenting on Amarinder’s “I told you so” remark after rival Navjot Singh Sidhu surprised the party with his resignation as PCC chief, Natwar Singh said: “Sidhu is a brilliant cricketer. I think he should go back to cricket.”
