By tradition, the ruling party’s candidate is usually unanimously elected as the speaker.

Former minister and five-time MLA UT Khadar on Tuesday filed his nomination as the Congress candidate for the post of Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Khadar, an MLA from Mangaluru Assembly constituency, filed his nomination at the Assembly Secretary’s office in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan and other Congress leaders.

The election for the post of Speaker is to be held on Wednesday.

By convention, the ruling party’s candidate is usually unanimously elected as the Speaker.

If elected, Khadar will be the first Muslim leader to hold the office of Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Khader had served as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the previous assembly and had also served as a minister in the past.
