Guwahati: The Congress has accused the BJP of forcing many of their municipal election candidates to withdraw their nominations by using money power and threat.
The Congress on Monday moved the state election commissioner, Alok Kumar, alleging unethical practice by the BJP as in the use of pressure tactics on voters and tempting candidates. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary (administration) Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee in a letter addressed to Kumar said Congress candidates almost in all the Municipal Board areas of the state, are facing threats from the rival political party.
“Ruling political party leaders are engaging their fellow party workers to mentally harass the Congress candidates and even at some places gherao the houses of INC candidates. They are mounting tremendous pressure on them to withdraw their nominations,” read the letter.
Bhattacharjee alleged that the supporters of the BJP are asking voters that they must take a photo with their mobile while casting their vote as proof of their support to the BJP. He wrote, “It is totally against the procedure of election and it will have to be stopped and kindly direct local administration not to allow the voters to carry mobile phones or any such digital device inside the polling station referring to election guidelines and model code of conduct.”
“Finally, in 845 wards we will have our own candidates and in another 18 we have seat-sharing with the Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPM and Independent candidates,” said Bhattacharjee. The Congress has sought adequate security for their candidates up to the date of the election.
