He also hit out at the electoral guarantees of the Congress, saying the opposition party would not come to power to implement them and the schemes promised could not be implemented.

Amid reports of tough competition among several BJP ticket aspirants in various constituencies for the upcoming assembly polls, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said it was natural that this would happen in a party which is confident of winning. And that party and its leadership is capable of handling the situation.

He also hit out at the electoral guarantees of the Congress, saying the opposition party would not come to power to implement them and the schemes promised could not be implemented.

“The party which wins will have competition, so naturally there is competition (in the BJP),” Bommai said in response to a question.

Talking to reporters here, he said that the BJP and its leadership are capable of handling the situation. He said, “Whoever will be given ticket by the high command, everyone will support him and ensure the party’s victory with absolute majority.”

The ruling BJP has set a target of winning at least 150 seats in the 224-member assembly, where elections are due by May.

According to some sources in the party, the stiff competition among the candidates could be a cause of concern for the BJP in several constituencies with the possibility of rebels emerging at some places.

Party sources said that in many constituencies there are many new candidates along with old leaders, and the party will have to strike a balance between them, winnability will be the criteria, and surveys may be considered while deciding the candidates.

Noting that several central leaders, including chief ministers of other states, are visiting Karnataka to campaign for the BJP in different parts of the state, the chief minister said the party’s organization is strong.

Pointing to the party’s various poll-related activities, such as booth-level ‘Vijay Sankalp Yatra’ and beneficiaries’ rally, he said, “Activities are going on in almost all the constituencies. This has enthused the workers and we are confident of getting an absolute majority. This? Make pickles?” “They (Congress) will not come to power and they (promises) will not be implemented. Can’t be done.”

The Congress has already announced three election ‘guarantees’ – 200 units of free electricity to all households (Griha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the female head of every household (Griha Lakshmi) and 10 kg rice free to each member of a BPL family (Anna Bhagya). PTI KSU ANE HDA
