Colorado government changes truck driver’s 110-year sentence to ten years after celebrities shouted – Henry’s Club

Colorado Following widespread pressure and public outcry from Kim Kardashian, Governor Jared Polis has reduced Roselle Aguilera-Maderos’ 110-year sentence to just ten years.

Aguilera-Maderos’ harsh sentence on December 13 drew criticism among millions – including a juror finding her guilty and Kardashian – who have been outspoken in their criticism of the sentence.

Kardashian took to Twitter on Thursday after learning about the Aguilera-Maderos clemency, where she thanked Governor Polis for giving the 26-year-old commutation for the fatal car crash that killed four people earlier this year.

Meanwhile, a petition on Change.org in favor of timely completion of his sentence had 4.5 million signatures as of Thursday night.

The decision on the sentencing of Rosalee Aguilera-Maderos came amid several years of conversion and pardons issued by the police.

The move comes days after it was set for hearing next month by a judge to reconsider the sentence at the request of the district attorney, who had planned to ask that it be reduced to 20 to 30 years.

He continued: ‘He was not drunk or under the influence; His brakes failed on the tractor-trailer.

‘Another shocking and unfair part of this case is that the judge did not want to give him such a long sentence.

‘However, their hands were tied because of the minimum mandatory in Colorado.

In April 2019, Aguilera-Maderos along with its semi-truck crashed into two dozen vehicles, killing four people and injuring several others.

‘Compulsory minimum takes away judicial discretion and needs to be abolished.’

Kardashian also denounced prosecutors’ gleeful celebrations, saying her gift of a break shoe trophy made her ‘sick’.

He said the governor, Jared Polis, ‘is a really nice guy and I know he’ll do the right thing.’

Aguilera-Maderos testified that the brakes on his semitrailer failed as he was descending a steep grade of Interstate 70 in the Rocky Mountain foothills.

His defense lawyer claimed that he did not know whether the brakes of his truck were smoking or that he would not be able to stop.

He also argued that Aguilera-Maderos’ actions were a series of reckless decisions, and that he did not intend to hurt anyone.

But prosecutors argued that they should have used a runaway ramp designed for such situations. For his part, Aguilera-Maderos said he was struggling to avoid traffic and was trying to slow down.

On October 15, a jury finally found Aguilera-Maderos guilty of 27 criminal charges, including:

  • four cases of vehicular murder
  • Two cases of attack on vehicles
  • Six cases of first class assault with blatant indifference
  • 10 counts of criminal attempt to assault in the first degree

“I’ve never thought about hurting anyone in my whole life and Jesus Christ, he knows that, he knows my heart,” he continued.

‘I am not a criminal, I am not a murderer.’

‘Accident – It was not intentional, it was not intentional, Hon. I did everything I could as a man. To avoid harming someone else, I have harmed myself.

He claimed he tried to avoid traffic, and noted that he did not run after ‘because I respect the laws’.

‘I want to say sorry, sorry for the loss, sorry for the injured,’ he concluded: ‘I ask … why God many times and not me.’

Relatives of the victims favored at least some jail time at their sentencing hearings, but in statements last week, King said he and his team had asked the surviving victims of the crash and the families of those who died, about the possibility of Aguilera Had talked. – Medros was being annoyed before issuing his request.

The juror called the sentence ‘100 times what it should have been’ and said the truck driver was responsible for the accident, with Judge A Bruce Jones giving him a ‘more appropriate sentence’.

Jones has said that his hands are tied because of mandatory minimum laws.

“Where a judge cannot interfere in any way and the way it is written is not correct, there is something wrong with it,” the jury said.

The jury also told FOX31 that it felt for the families of the victims, but felt compelled to speak in favor of reducing Aguilera-Maderos’ sentence.

‘Not me [think] The governor should sit there and pardon him and release him.”

‘But it would be a more appropriate sentence to step in and say what happened.’

As of Tuesday, nearly 5 million people signed up change.org Demanded to reduce the punishment of the trucker.

A petition addressed to police and the Jefferson County courts said, ‘Roselle Lazaro Aguilera-Maderos … has nothing on her driving record or her criminal history.

The governor is the only person who can grant pardon at the state level.

The police recently reduced his sentence to four and issued 18 clemency in December 2020. Forgiveness usually results in a reduction in punishment or a pardon.

The petition further stated that Aguilera-Maderos ‘could have acted differently to avoid the courts’, but commended her for ultimately taking responsibility and apologizing to the families of the victims.

According to the Change.org page, it has become the third most signed petition on the website.

Kardashian previously urged Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt is to be hanged in three days after the governor refuses to see his mother, to spare the life of death row prisoner Julius Jones.

Jones, 41, is to be hanged last month for the 1999 murder of Edmund businessman Paul Howell.

Jones maintains that he is innocent and claims he was framed by the actual killer, Christopher Jordan, a high school friend and co-defendant, who testified against Jones and was released from prison after 15 years.

Kardashian, who has been a vocal advocate of criminal justice reform in recent years, said they are all “eagerly awaiting” Governor Stitt’s decision.

The state’s Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 to recommend Jones pardon and commute his sentence to life imprisonment.
