cold wave: In view of the cold wave in the national capital, the winter vacation in private schools in Delhi has been extended till January 15, said a circular from the Directorate of Education of the Delhi government. Private schools will reopen on January 9 after winter vacation.

The circular said, “In continuation of the earlier circular of DOE (Directorate of Education), all private schools in Delhi are advised to remain closed till January 15, 2023.”

Delhi witnessed a severe cold wave on Sunday, with the minimum temperature at the city’s primary weather station, the Safdarjung Observatory, falling to a bone-chilling 1.9 degrees Celsius, the lowest in two years in January.

Also in Uttar Pradesh, schools in several districts, including Lucknow, will remain closed till January 14 due to cold wave conditions. An official notice has been issued by the District Magistrates in various districts.

As per the notice, all schools in Lucknow will remain closed from January 9 to January 14 due to weather conditions for students of classes 1 to 8 only.

“In view of the difficulty faced by the students in reaching the schools due to extreme cold wave, all the schools of class 1 to 8 in urban and rural areas will remain closed from January 9 to January 14,” the notice said.

A dark layer of dense fog enveloped northwest India and adjoining central and eastern parts of the country, affecting road, rail and air traffic.

On Saturday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees Celsius – lower than most places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and some hill stations in Jammu and Kashmir.

A severe cold wave occurs when the minimum temperature drops by 2 °C or the departure from the normal range is more than 6.4 °C.

A cold day is when the minimum temperature is less than or equal to 10 °C and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 °C below normal. An extremely cold day is one when the maximum temperature is at least 6.5 degrees below normal.
