Cold wave to continue in Punjab, Haryana; Tamil Nadu will see more rain

Barring Punjab and Haryana, some respite from intense cold wave is likely over Northwest India during next 5-7 days, while heavy rain activity is likely to continue over South Tamil Nadu during next 24 hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold wave conditions are very likely to persist over isolated parts of Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours and subside thereafter.

“Cold wave conditions very likely over Odisha on January 3-4 and at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh during next 24 hours,” it said.

The minimum temperature remained in the range of 2-6 degree Celsius over some parts of Punjab, North Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and North Madhya Pradesh. The IMD said that cold wave conditions to severe cold wave conditions have prevailed in some parts of Punjab and isolated parts of Haryana during the last one day.

The IMD also said that there will be no significant change in the minimum temperature over Northwest India over the next one day and will gradually increase by 3-5 degrees Celsius in the subsequent 3-4 days. Hence, the minimum temperatures will be much above normal, much above normal from January 4.

It has predicted that during the next seven days, two consecutive active Western Disturbances and their induced systems with moisture from the Arabian Sea are likely to affect northwest and adjoining central India.

“Under its influence, fairly widespread light/moderate rainfall is very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, North Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh during 5-7 January and light rain over West Madhya Pradesh on 5 January. Isolated thunderstorms are very likely to occur over Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan along with hailstorm over Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan on January 5.
