The Indian Coast Guard said it rescued an eight-member crew of a merchant ship on Saturday after it was stranded 18 nautical miles from Beypore in Kerala’s Kozhikode district. The Coast Guard was alerted to a distress call from MSV Bilal, which reported water ingress and engine failure while on its way to Lakshadweep.
A Coast Guard press release said, “On finding that the engine malfunctioned due to ingress of water, requiring immediate repair, the MSV was taken ashore by Coast Guard ship. ” Coast Guard ship ‘Vikram’ answered the call and provided assistance. In addition, interceptor boat C-404 was placed on patrol, which was diverted for enhanced support, the release said. Considering the situation, Vikram deployed a technical team and boarded the stranded MSV for situational assessment.
