Days after the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the United States on Friday raised concerns about the notification of the law and said that they are closely monitoring the implementation process of this Act.

With an aim to provide Indian citizenship to the Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis refugees who migrated from neighboring Muslim-majority countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, before December 31, 2014, and suffered ‘religious persecution or fear or religious persecution’ in their origin country.

Addressing the media, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said that they are concerned about the notifications of the CAA and they are closely monitoring how this Act will be implemented.
He also underlined that the fundamental of democratic principles is respect for religious freedom and equal treatment under the law for all communities.

After the bill was passed by the parliament in 2019, the Union Home Ministry consistently sought extensions from committees for the formulation of rules enabling eligible individuals to apply for Indian citizenship. On March 11, 2024, the Centre officially notified the rules pertaining to CAA. This notification comes several months after Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that this would be accomplished before the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls 2024 slated to take place in April-May.
