Chinese-Canadian pop star Chris Wu arrested for raping teen

Chinese-Canadian pop star Chris Wu was arrested on Monday on suspicion of rape in a high-profile case alleging that the singer had sex with a 17-year-old girl while she was intoxicated and lured young women into sexual relations.

The prosecutor’s office for Chaoyang’s Beijing district said in a sentence statement that Wu’s arrest had been formally approved but gave no details of the charges.

Wu, 30, had earlier denied allegations by a teenager that he had sex with her while intoxicated. The allegation prompted sympathetic comments online and criticism of Wu for the teenager.

The teenager said that seven women approached him to say that a former member of the Korean boy band EXO had seduced him with promises of jobs and other opportunities. She said some were under the age of 18, but gave no indication of whether any were under the age of 14 with Chinese consent.

Wu, known in Chinese as Wu Yifan, denied having sex with partners under the age of 14.

According to a police statement at the time, Wu was detained on August 1 while police investigated in response to comments online that he “repeatedly lured young women”.

Wu grew up in Guangzhou, China and Vancouver, British Columbia. Police have said that he is a citizen of Canada.

The teenager publicized her allegations on social media and later in an interview with Internet portal NetEase. The day after that interview, at least 10 brands, including Porsche and Louis Vuitton, snapped endorsements and other deals with Wu.
