China’s smartphone market growth remains mostly flat despite supply chain issues

In 2021, 329.3 million smartphones were shipped in China, registering a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 1.1 percent, according to an industry report. A report released by research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) said that in Q4 2021, the market declined by 3.5 per cent annually to 83.4 million shipments, mainly supported by the launch of key products in December.

In 2021, the Chinese smartphone market experienced L-shaped growth, with Q1 2021 rising amid better COVID-19 containment and stimulus programs, followed by a decline in the following quarters due to supply constraints and low to mid- -Range and high-end products to meet the challenges of demanding demand.

“Apple and vivo took the top spot in 4Q21 and 2021 respectively. Honor continued its momentum in 4Q21 and took another spot from the previous quarter,” said Will Wong, Research Manager for Client Devices at IDC Asia/Pacific.

“There is more intense competition coming in 2022 as no seller is likely to give up their crown in the lucrative market,” Wong said.

Apple saw a favorable response to its iPhone 13 series, as the product was supported not only by a competitive pricing strategy and Huawei’s decline, but also by good supply chain management and improved channel penetration.

In 2021, Apple reached over 50 million shipments and also saw its biggest increase among the top five vendors since reaching the mark in 2015.

Honor continued its growth in Q4 2021 with the launch of Honor 60 series and X30 series in December.

Vivo with its complete product portfolio remained at number one position throughout the year 2021. Vivo’s X series and its sub-brand, iQOO, achieved favorable growth in the year.

Oppo took the second spot in 2021 with K, Reno and Find series garnering a higher share of its portfolio than last year. Meanwhile, Xiaomi’s new products, the Note 11 series and the Mi 12 series, affected the seller’s performance in Q4 2021, especially in the last month of the year.

In 2021, the Chinese market shipped 1.5 million foldable smartphones, but it remained a niche market with only a 0.5 percent share.
