The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries that hold summits every year revolve around the presidency.

President Xi Jinping said on Thursday that China will take over as the chairman of BRICS next year and host the bloc’s 14th summit in 2022. China looks forward to working with BRICS partners to deepen cooperation in all fields and create a closer and greater outcome. Addressing the 13th BRICS summit via video link, Xi said the partnership is focused on meeting common challenges and building a better future, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is presiding over the 13th BRICS summit. The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries that hold summits every year revolve around the presidency.

India is the chair of BRICS this year. Russian President Vladimir Putin, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro also attended the summit.

The theme of the summit was “Intra-BRICS Cooperation for Sustainability, Consolidation and Consensus”. This year the summit coincides with the 15th anniversary of BRICS.

BRICS brings together the five largest developing countries in the world, representing 41 percent of the global population, 24 percent of global GDP and 16 percent of global trade.

This was the second time that Prime Minister Modi chaired the BRICS summit. Earlier, he had presided over the Goa summit in 2016.
