China has urged Apple to strengthen its data security and personal privacy protections, the country’s state planner said in a statement on Tuesday.

Zheng Shanjie, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks during a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook on Monday, the statement said.

The director also pointed out that “China’s industrial digitization and digital industrialization process, the super-large-scale market, and the huge middle-income group will all bring a broad market for multinational companies, including Apple.”

Apple is well aware of the importance of China to its business. In its most recent annual financial results, iBiz reported $74.2 billion – nearly 19 percent of its $394 billion annual revenue – won in Greater China.
