China assures to consider return of Indian medical students after two years of online education

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has assured his Indian counterpart Dr S Jaishankar that he will “talk to the relevant authorities” regarding the return of Indian medical students. Since the start of the pandemic in March, Indian students studying in medical colleges have returned. Looking forward to resuming his studies at home and on his university campus.

Ever since Indian students registered in medical colleges located in China are continuing their studies in online mode. Considering the practical aspect of the study, the students claim that online education is not enough and are urging the Indian government to take up the issue with the Chinese government.

After meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said, “Yi assured me that he will talk to the relevant authorities when he returns to the matter.” He also recognized the special concerns of medical students in this difficult situation.”

These students cannot practice medicine in India after having an online degree because the Indian government does not recognize online education for MBBS, BDS, or other medical courses.

Earlier, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, while answering a question in the Rajya Sabha, had said that China had restricted travel by suspending visas and residence permits with effect from March 27, 2020, in view of the pandemic.

He said, “As per available information, around 20,000 Indian students had enrolled in various courses including clinical medicine courses in various Chinese universities at that time. A large number of them returned to India when all the universities in China were closed. ” she added.

Muraleedharan said that universities in China have not fully opened till date. “The government is taking up the matter of return of Indian students with the Chinese authorities in New Delhi and through our embassy in China. Regular updates have been given to Indian students by the Embassy in this regard.”
