Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar walked 18 km to know the challenges faced by the polling team in the hilly areas. Rajiv first landed in Peepalkoti by helicopter and then reached Dumak and Kalgoth villages in remote areas of Uttarakhand. Where the team takes 3 days to reach during the election.

Rajiv said- I wanted to visit here to understand the challenges faced by the polling team during elections. The team will visit more such polling booths to understand the requirements.

First visit after becoming election commissioner
Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has taken over as the Chief Election Commissioner with effect from May 15, 2022. Sushil Chandra’s term was completed on 14 May 2022. He is undertaking this padyatra at a time when the commission is considering giving hardship allowance and insurance cover to the polling teams deployed in difficult areas, villages along the Pakistan border, insurgency-terrorism affected areas.

Only 290 voters in Dumak
Dumak and Kalgoth polling stations are part of Badrinath assembly. There are a total of 290 voters in the voting list of Dumak village, about 60 km from Gopeshwar. In the recently held assembly elections, 80% of the people had exercised their franchise. Chief Election Commissioner Kumar is a trained trekker, he has already trekked the upper reaches of Himalayas on foot. Including Ladakh, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Tibet. He also has experience of trekking Sahyadri, Western Ghats and Palghat.
