A policeman has formed a political party in Chhattisgarh to contest the state assembly elections later this year, in which he plans to field candidates in all 90 constituencies. The constable, identified as Ujjwal Diwan, is posted in Dhamtari district and has led several protests by families of cops for their various demands. Diwan said suspended, expelled and retired policemen would be part of his party, while many other cops would be part of it after leaving their jobs.

Struggling to register as a new political party, Dewan and his associates decided to take over the already registered organization ‘Azad Janata Party’. Diwan, who is the state president of AJP, said he has been fighting for the welfare of policemen and their families since 2018.

He said that he does not believe in any political party and hence he has formed his organization with the aim of providing justice to the victims of crime in the state.

Several cases were registered against me and I had to go to jail as well. Now I do not trust any political party. So we decided to form our own party and contest elections. Our aim is to provide justice to every victim of the state. The constable said that he had tendered his resignation in 2021 but the department is yet to accept it. He said that he can contest the election only after his resignation is accepted.

Suspended police constable Sanjeev Mishra, who has been appointed as the state spokesperson of the party, said that he had applied for the registration of a new party, but had some objections to its name, due to which he decided to go with the AJP. Did. He said that he would field candidates in all the 90 assembly constituencies in the upcoming assembly elections.

Mishra said that he was suspended last year and had submitted his resignation, though the authorities are yet to accept it. Talking about the resources to contest the assembly polls, Divan, the party chief said that they would use crowdfunding to arrange resources to run the party.

He said aggrieved police personnel like him, who have been unilaterally dismissed from service or taken voluntary retirement, have joined his party. He claimed the support of the families of over 80,000 policemen and 4.5 lakh contractual employees working in state government departments.

Families of lower-rank policemen from different parts of the state have staged several protests over the last five years with their demands including higher pay, weekly off, government quarters for all jawans and response allowance.
