RAJKOT: Rajkot police commissioner Manoj Agarwalwho is the eye of storm following of corruption levelled by local MLA, refused to comment on the issue citing pending investigation.
However, a cryptic Agarwalwhile praising his subordinates, said in the same breath that will be ordered if there are investigation against any of them.
three days after MLA Govind Patel wrote to the state government complaining about Agarwal demanding commission in money recovered in fraud and cheating cases, the top cop met media persons at his office on Tuesday.
“ In the last two-three days, various have been made against police and some made against me. I won’t respond regarding the investigation against me because of the pending investigation,” he said.
Agarwal said that he had briefed his seniors about the MLA’s and that he will record his statement before the probe committee appointed by the government.
Agarwal said he had left Rajkot on Saturday morning and “unfortunately,” the against him came into light the same day. He went to Ahmedabad as four cases against Rajkot police were filed in Gujarat high court and he was required to file a response along with guiding the legal team.
Appreciating the work of city police, the commissioner said, “We are here for the safety and security of Rajkot city and we have worked day and night for maintaining peace. Police have brought down crime in the city and worked hard during the pandemic. If there are any against them, we will get them investigated through senior officers.”
“Action will be taken as per the law, but I want to tell my team that all should continue working with the same passion as they have been doing so far,” he said.
He also denied the cited reason that Rajkot police doesn’t convert applications into FIRs figures to prove that the number of applications reduced during his tenure.
According to Agarwal, in 2017 total 14,244 applications were received by various police stations, 14,567 in 2018 12,875 in 2019, 11,146 in 2020 and 10,488 in 2021. He claimed “In all applications where a cognizable offense was found, FIRs were registered.”
Rajkot south constituency BJP MLA Govind Patel on February 2, 2022, had written to the home department stating: “Rajkot police commissioner is taking hawala like goons for recovered money” without, however, taking any names.
Talking to TOI, Patel said that “The investigation is going on and whenever I will be asked, I will produce more evidence and more such cases to the home minister.”
