Chandigarh Administration bans sale, use of firecrackers
To prevent the risk of spread of COVID-19 due to the polluted environment, the Chandigarh Administration on Tuesday imposed a complete ban on the sale or use of any type of firecrackers, according to an official order. The order said that these directions shall come into force with immediate effect and shall remain in force till further notice.
The order said the decision was taken after extensive consultations with health, environmental experts and other stakeholders.
According to an official release, “It has been decided that the toxic air emitted by firecrackers may affect health, hence residents should refrain from bursting crackers during this festive season.”
It further said, “This decision has been taken keeping in view the prevailing situation of Kovid, the order of the National Green Tribunal and the Disaster Management Act.”
Any contravention of orders will invite penal action under relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, besides legal action under section 188 (disobedience of order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code and other provisions.
