Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson scored a rare Champions League goal to seal a 3-2 win over AC Milan in a rocking Group B opener at Anfield on Wednesday (September 15). Henderson entered home in the 69th minute to settle a thrilling contest between two European heavyweights, whose last two meetings had been in the final.
With Anfield welcoming fans to a Champions League night for the first time in 18 months, Liverpool were threatened with a riot when their own goal from Fikayo Tomori gave them an early lead in a barnstorming start.
Remarkably, after facing the storm, which included a Mohamed Salah penalty miss, Milan calmed the home crowd twice in quick succession with Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz at the end of the first half. Milan then denied a goal immediately after the break, before Salah made amends for his penalty miss by equalizing from close range in the 49th minute.
The result was still in doubt until Henderson capped a memorable Anfield night with a groundbreaking effort – only his second in the competition and his first for seven years.
“In the first half hour we blew them away,” Liverpool conceded to Andy Robertson. “Then we slackened and stopped doing the things we were doing really well. We let them come back into the game and walk in at halftime thinking ‘How did we let this happen?'”
Milan’s return to Europe’s top club competition for the first time in seven years started off badly as the seven-time champions were initially overwhelmed. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic unavailable and several players making his Champions League debut, Milan looked ill-equipped to compete and fell behind in the ninth minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold slammed into the right side of the field and hit his cross east of Chelsea. The player caught on Tomori and defeated Milan keeper Mike Megan.
Before Milan could clear his head, he conceded a penalty when Ismail Benesar blocked Robertson’s shot with his hand. But Magnon dives to his right to keep Salah’s punishment away.
This was only the second time in 19 attempts that Salah failed to convert a spot kick and it proved to be a turning point. Salah fired and Joel Matip turned straight to Megan as the opportunity kept coming but Liverpool rocked their heels as Milan turned the game on its head – Liverpool manager Klopp later said that his team was a bit off.
