Challenge for coaches and players is to manage workload: Andrew McDonald

New Australian cricket team head coach Andrew McDonald has indicated that he struck a tough deal with Cricket Australia (CA) before guiding the top-ranked Test team in the world for the next four years.

Former Test cricketer McDonald was on Wednesday appointed the head coach of the Australian team after he was interim coach for nearly two months after Justin Langer stepped down due to disagreements over a contract extension.

McDonald’s has played four Tests and most recently oversaw Australia’s Test series win against Pakistan.

Speaking to the media after his appointment as head coach, McDonald said that one condition that prompted him to accept full-time responsibility was that other coaches would also be elevated at different times, so that The burden does not fall only on one person.

“I feel like I have the coaching staff to step up, and we can pick up a few coaches at different times to meet different tours and different challenges. In doing so it is only increasing the depth of our coaching staff… cricket.com.au,

“Once it was decided that I was the preferred candidate, I had the opportunity to sit down with people in and around Cricket Australia to play the role. It (management of workload) was a big part of it, no doubt about it,” said the 40-year-old.

McDonald – who had always been at the forefront of the job after coaching domestic cricket to join the Australian coaching setup as an assistant in 2019, won both the Sheffield Shield and One-Day competitions with Victoria, as well as Won the eighth edition as well. “The biggest challenge for coaches and players is managing their workload over the course of four years,” McDonald’s said on Wednesday.

Australia includes a Test tour of India, an away Ashes series and an ODI World Cup in India next year, and it would be tough for one person to oversee all those responsibilities.

CA chief executive Nick Hockley said several candidates were interviewed before McDonald’s was selected.

“We interviewed a number of outstanding candidates for the role, one of the most important in Australian sport. Andrew has already shown he is an excellent head coach and the approach he approached for the role during the hiring process He was both impressive and exciting, making him our obvious choice.

“We are proud of the way the team played under the leadership of Andrew, Pat (Cummins) and Aaron (Finch) and the respect shown throughout the tour of Pakistan, and indeed Andrew is playing the role permanently,” Hockley said. “
