The nine-day-long Navratri festival is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is widely celebrated in India. The word Navratri is derived from the Sanskrit words Nava and Ratri, which mean nine nights. Chaitra Navratri (March-April) and Sharad Navratri (September) are the two most important Navratri. During the nine days of Navratri, nine incarnations of Maa Durga are worshipped. This year Navratri will be celebrated from April 2 to April 11. Ram Navami will be celebrated on Sunday 10th April.

Thus, those who pray to the deity and observe fast must follow some strict rules during the nine days of prosperity and fortune. Here are some things you should avoid throughout the nine days:

avoid alcoholic beverages

According to Hinduism, it is strictly forbidden to consume alcohol on any religious ceremony or festival including Navratri.

Devotees observing the fast should avoid cutting hair or shaving during Navratri. It is also wrong to shave your beard during Navratri.

avoid biting your nails

Apart from the foregoing haircuts and shaving, devotees should avoid cutting their nails during these nine days.

Do not eat onion or garlic

Onions and garlic are tamasic in nature, which means they can be harmful to the mind or body. Sattvik diet should be taken to take care for nine days.

Avoid eating non-vegetarian food

Apart from garlic, onions, grains and salt, people should avoid all non-vegetarian foods during this holiday.

lemons should not be cut

During Navratri, one should avoid cutting or cutting lemon as much as possible. It is considered inauspicious. Eating devotees should take extra precautions to avoid this.
